Cardio (short for cardio-vascular) is exercise that elevates your heart rate and your breathing for a prolonged period of time. (Scary movies don’t count). Some examples are walking (brisk walking, not strolling), jogging, running, biking, swimming, skating and aerobic classes. Treadmills, stationary bikes, elliptical machines and rowers are examples of some cardio machines that you might find in the gym.
Another question that I often get asked, is what is the best cardio to do? The answer, is to choose a few options and to pick things that you like to do best. The best cardio is the one that you will continue to do, even on the days that you don’t want to work out.
